The crisp clarity that the PNG format provides also means that the files end up being quite large. This isn’t good if you are loading them on a webpage because speed is important. So here’s a way to make the images smaller in size without sacrificing quality.

Make PNG Images Smaller

TinyPNG helps you make PNG files smaller so that the web pages you use them on load faster. It does this by optimizing them; it’s a lossy process, but I personally can’t see any degradation in image quality. It reduces the number of colors and removes unnecessary metadata. In terms of file size, the results can be impressive. For this example, I’m using a PNG screenshot that’s 1098 x 855 pixels in resolution and has an initial size of 462 kilobytes. To start, go to TinyPNG here.

Now you have one of two options – you can either drag the file you want to shrink on the dedicated field or click the respective field and upload your PNG.

After that, TinyPNG will work its magic. First, it will display how much the image has been reduced, both in percentage and size. Let’s see how it worked with my test file, which, as you may remember, was 462 kilobytes in size. As you can see, the file size has been reduced by 76% and is now 109.4 kilobytes — 352 kilobytes less. All that’s left to do is click the download button to get the new file.

If you want quality screenshots and other photos on your site and reduce their size without much variance in quality, TinyPNG is a great tool for the job. It’s also worth mentioning that if you’re a Photoshop user, TinyPNG provides a plugin for it too. All that is currently missing (3/2/15) is file conversion, so BMP, JPG, and other standard files can be minimized into PNG files. Comment Name * Email *
